Attributes, Options, & Custom Fields

This guide explains how to leverage unique fields within Flxpoint to create detailed product listings. It covers Attributes, Options, and Custom Fields and explains how to import and use them to manage your inventory and channel listings.

What are Unique Fields?

Unique fields in Flxpoint include:

  • Attributes: Characteristics that describe a parent product. For example, while a shirt may come in different sizes and colors, the material (e.g., cotton) remains the same across all variants.
  • Options: Required for creating Parent/Variant relationships. Options represent the choices available for a product. In our shirt example, Size and Color are typical options (e.g., a Small, Red shirt).
  • Custom Fields: Additional data points that you want to include on a product. These fields can be used within Flxpoint or sent to your channel. On your publish listings template, these must be assigned to a channel-specific field.

Attributes

Attributes describe features of the parent product and are shared across all variants.

How to import attributes:

  1. Prepare your file: Use the Get Inventory Primary integration mapping template.
  2. Set up headers:
    • Column header: Attribute Name 1 (e.g., Material)
    • Column header: Attribute Value 1 (e.g., Cotton)
  3. Import the file: Values entered under the headers will apply to the parent record.
  4. Add manually: You can also add attributes by navigating to the parent record in the Product Catalog, scrolling to the Attributes section, and clicking the add button.

Example:
Attribute Name 1: Material
Attribute Value 1: Cotton

Options

Options define the Parent/Variant relationships by specifying the variations available for the product.

How to import options:

  • Prepare your file: Use the Get Inventory Primary integration mapping template.
  • Set up headers:
    • Column header: Option Name 1 (e.g., Size)
    • Column header: Option Value 1 (e.g., Small)

  • Import the file:
    • The Option Name is assigned to the parent record.
    • The Option Value is assigned to each variant record.

  • Add manually: Navigate to the parent record in the Product Catalog, scroll to the Options section, and click the add button to enter the Option Name and corresponding Option Values in the Variant view.

Important:

  • Options are required if a parent product has multiple variant records.
  • All variants under the same parent must have a consistent option structure (e.g., if one variant includes Size, every variant must have a value for size).

Custom Fields

Custom Fields allow you to add any additional data to your product listings.

How to import Custom Fields:

  • Prepare your file: Use the Get Inventory Primary integration mapping template.
  • Set up headers:
    • Column header: Custom Field Name 1 (e.g., Discount Code)
    • Column header: Custom Field Value 1 (e.g., SAVE20)

  • Import the file: Custom Fields can be applied at either the Parent or Variant level. Decide whether a Custom Field is universal to all variants (place on the Parent) or specific to certain variants.
  • Add manually: You can also add Custom Fields by navigating to the parent record in the Product Catalog and saving once you add the field.

Tip: If your file contains a column for the field value but not the name, you can hard-code the Custom Field Name directly in the mapping template.

Filtering with Unique Fields

Flxpoint’s filtering tools allow you to refine your inventory and channel listings by using Key/Value pairs and lists. By applying filters to Attributes, Options, and Custom Fields, you can better manage your product data and quickly identify specific inventory or listing criteria.

Visual Aid:
When you filter your products, you will see a display similar to the example below, showing key/value pairs that match your filter criteria.

Unique Fields & Channels

Different channels interact with Unique Fields in various ways. Here are some common use cases:

  • Parent/Variant Relationships: Some channels require consistent options across variants. Ensure that your Option structure is identical for all variants under a parent product.

  • SEO Integration: Attributes and Custom Fields are often used as metafields to enhance Search Engine Optimization when the information is pushed to your channel.

Reminder:
Always check your channel’s publish mapping template to verify that the channel supports the field (Attribute or Custom Field) you are trying to map.

Troubleshooting & FAQ

  • All required fields are present.
  • The option structure is consistent across variants.
  • Custom Fields are correctly assigned as per channel specifications.

Q: How can I improve my import process?
A:

  1. Double-check column headers in your import file against the integration mapping template.
  2. Use the step-by-step instructions above to verify the data for Attributes, Options, and Custom Fields.
  3. Consult the troubleshooting section or contact support if you encounter persistent issues.
