Gmail 2FA App Password Setup
Summary
How to generate and use a Google App Password so a Gmail account with 2-Step Verification can be connected to Flxpoint for custom alert emails.
If your Gmail account has 2-Step Verification and you want to use it for Flxpoint email connections (for example, custom alerts), you must generate a 16-character Google App Password and use that instead of your normal Gmail password. If you would rather not, use the Flxpoint email option instead.
| Field | Value |
|---|---|
| Host | smtp.gmail.com |
| Port | 587 |
| Connection Type | TLS |
| Password | The 16-character Google App Password (not your Gmail password) |
| Signal | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Gmail has 2-Step Verification on | A normal password will not authenticate; you need an app password. |
| “password incorrect” on Test Connection | You are likely using your Gmail password instead of an app password. |
| Your password is not 16 characters | Google app passwords are always 16 characters. |
“password incorrect” when testing the email connection
You are almost certainly using your regular Gmail password. Generate a Google App Password (16 characters) and paste that into the Password field instead, with Host smtp.gmail.com, Port 587, Connection Type TLS.
No option to create an app password in Google
Make sure 2-Step Verification is not set up only for security keys, and that Advanced Protection is not enabled. If it still will not appear, use the Flxpoint Email option for custom alerts.
When do I need a Google App Password?
When your Gmail has 2-Step Verification and you want to connect it to Flxpoint — for example to send custom alerts.
How do I create one?
Enable 2-Step Verification, open Google’s App Passwords page, choose Other (Custom name) such as “Flxpoint Email”, click Generate, and copy the 16-character password.
What SMTP settings does Flxpoint need?
Host smtp.gmail.com, Port 587, Connection Type TLS, and the 16-character app password.
What if I cannot create an app password?
Confirm 2-Step Verification is on (not only security keys) and Advanced Protection is off. Otherwise use the built-in Flxpoint Email option instead.
