How to Manage Image Formats
Summary
Supported and preferred image formats vary by sales channel, which affects both listing appearance and store load speed; setting the Publish Template's image field to Don't Map keeps Flxpoint from overwriting images you added directly on the channel.
Image format affects both how your listings look and how fast your store loads, which matters most in drop-shipping. Supported formats vary by channel, so match your images to each channel's accepted and preferred formats.
- Match the channel: Use each channel's supported formats, and its preferred format for product photos.
- Optimize delivery: Where supported, WebP delivers optimized images; JPEG is the safe default for product photos.
- Avoid overwriting your images: Set the Publish Template's image field to Don't Map to keep images you added on the channel.
| Channel | Formats | Preferred |
|---|---|---|
| Amazon | JPEG, PNG, TIFF, GIF | JPEG for product photos |
| eBay | JPEG, PNG, GIF, BMP, TIFF | JPEG general; PNG for transparency |
| Shopify | JPEG, PNG, GIF, WebP | JPEG most; WebP for optimized delivery |
| Walmart | JPEG, PNG, GIF | JPEG for product images |
| BigCommerce | JPEG, PNG, GIF, WebP | JPEG and WebP |
| WooCommerce | JPEG, PNG, GIF, WebP | JPEG and WebP |
| Magento | JPEG, PNG, GIF, WebP | JPEG for most product images |
Automatic image compression
Flxpoint automatically compresses large images during the fetching process to ensure they meet channel requirements and optimize performance. Images are reduced to a maximum file size of 4MB and dimensions are capped at 2500px width by 5000px height. This feature supports JPEG, WebP, and PNG formats; GIF and SVG files are currently excluded from automatic compression.
You can enable or disable this behavior globally by navigating to Settings > Feature Opt-In/Out and toggling the Image Compression setting. When enabled, Flxpoint replaces the original asset with a compressed version, updates the image path, and populates metadata fields for size (KB), width, height, and compression status.
Shopify publish fails on advanced image duplication logic
The error “Advanced image duplication logic is enabled. All of this product's images must first be fetched…” is a channel-side image-handling gate and is not fixed by rebuilding. Review the channel's advanced image settings; contact support with the affected product if you cannot locate the setting.
Which format should I use by default?
JPEG is the safe default for product photos across channels. Use WebP where supported (Shopify, BigCommerce, WooCommerce, Magento) for optimized delivery, and PNG when you need transparency.
How do I stop Flxpoint from overwriting images I set on the channel?
Set the Publish Template's image field to Don't Map so publishing and overwriting leave the channel images alone.
What it does
To prevent listing errors caused by oversized image files, Flxpoint includes an automated image compression feature. When enabled, this tool processes images from your sources to ensure they meet standard ecommerce size and dimension thresholds. This is particularly useful for channels like Amazon or Topdawg that have strict limits on file sizes.
Compression standards
The system applies specific constraints to all processed images to maintain a balance between visual quality and platform compatibility:
Maximum File Size: 4 MB
Maximum Dimensions: 2500 pixels wide by 5000 pixels high
When an image exceeds these limits, Flxpoint compresses the file, replaces the original asset in the Flxpoint storage, and updates the image path in your database. This process tracks new metadata for each image, including its size in KB, its width and height, and a boolean flag indicating if compression has been applied.
Enabling compression
Image compression is a global account setting. You can manage this feature by navigating to Settings and then Feature Opt-In/Out. Once enabled, compression occurs automatically during the image fetching flow when products are synced from your sources.
Note: While compression is automated, there may be a slight delay during the initial sync as the background job processes large catalogs for the first time.
Supported formats
Format | Compression Status |
|---|---|
JPEG, WebP, PNG | Supported for automated compression. |
GIF, SVG | Excluded; these formats are not currently compressed by the automated job. |
Common issues
Why did my listing fail with an image size error?
Ensure the Feature Opt-In is enabled in your settings. If it is enabled, check if the image is a GIF or SVG, as these formats are not currently supported for automated compression and must be resized manually.
Does compression affect my Master Catalog images?
Yes. The compression job processes images at both the Virtual (Master Catalog) and Listing levels to ensure consistency across all sales channels.
